Staying Energised in Quarantine

I think we can all agree that these last couple of weeks have been soooo trying… the uncertainty of what’s going to happen and how long this is all going to last has surely driven everyone and their mama’s insane. The scariest part about this all is what’s going to happen to different people’s mental health after being couped up inside for several weeks without much to keep them busy or occupied… but that’s a topic for another day. This week I just thought I’d share a few of the things I’ve been intentional about doing to stay energised in this time…

1. Morning Yoga

Before quarantine, I had set the intention of going to a yoga class one weekend as a way to de-stress and reconnect with myself. That didn’t happen. I did however, stumble upon a yoga instructor on YouTube who I absolutely fell in love with, and I’ve since been dedicating just 10 minutes of my morning to yoga everyday. She’s currently hosting a 30 day yoga challenge with 30 different affirmations you can speak over yourself throughout the routine/day and I’m loving it! It’s such a great way of calming down the anxiety from this pandemic and just slowing things down to connect your mind to your body. If you’re feeling hesitant just think of it this way: what is 10 minutes of deep stretching and doing something just for you really going to hurt? I’d really recommend checking her out :). 2. Setting a Routine

I’ve been working from home for the last 5-6 weeks now and I only really got the hang of it after the first 2. It really isn’t as easy as you’d think to have to motivate yourself at home, but I’m thankful to still have a job and for the distraction it provides from our reality. Knowing that I have somewhere to be (albeit just the make-shift work station in my living room) really helps me to set a daily routine and stick to it, and this is important for my mental because it gives me a sense of normalcy in all of the craziness. But what if you don’t have a job or any assignments due?

I would recommend that you still create a schedule for the things you’ve been doing so far. Your schedule could look like the one below, for example. The point of this is to give your day some sort of structure and empower you to follow through with it because you now have an element of control over your life once more. Remember, you are in control, this virus isn’t.

A schedule can also help you fight the urge to stare at your phone unproductively all day by forcing you to engage in other (pre-set) activities. If you write it down, you’re already 50% more likely to actually do it πŸ˜‰

3. Exercise

I know I know… if you didn’t go to the gym before quarantine, what’s going to make you start now? Well leave it to me to tell you that there’s very little you can blame at this point for not being able to work out haha. If you have absolutely nothing to do all day but scroll and re-scroll through all your social networks and watch Netflix, trust me, working out will be a welcome distraction from this everyday routine.

Not only has cyber-bullying on the socials increased during quarantine (yuck), but if I have to see one more Savage challenge I may lick a handrail and end it all. Please, put your phone down for a minute and do a couple of crunches or 20 minutes of cardio (if you’re looking for a sign to do your workout today, this is it). Dance cardio is my fave and you can guarantee yourself a fun and interactive session with these ladies! You’ll see how good it feels and before you know it, you can add it to your daily quarantine schedule and actually look forward to it, too.

4. Reading Books

Ok so I haven’t been as dedicated to this as I want to, but reading is another great way to get yourself off of your phone and force your brain to work in a healthy way (honestly if you’ve made it to this point in my blog I’m really proud of you lol). Our attention spans have definitely become impaired over time with all of the screen time we consume, but making a commitment to read 10 pages a day of anything you’re interested in is the start of building good habits that your post-quarantine self will be proud of. I like to think of reading as an escape because I can drown myself in another person’s reality rather than my own – and that sounds real tempting right about now.

5. Staying in Touch with Friends, Family, and God

No matter who you’re quarantining with, it will be important to keep in close touch with the rest of the people you love. It can be so easy to get caught up in my own head sometimes because I’m so used to being alone and enjoying my own company. I can quickly forget the importance of checking in with everyone else around me and letting them know I’m okay, and making sure they’re good too. Thank God for technology and the ease at which we can communicate with each other in different parts of the world (even though it isn’t the same as being together in person, sigh).

Speaking of God, talking to him about what’s been going on, my worries and fears, and leaving it all in His hands has gotten me a long way through this pandemic. I hope we can all encourage each other to keep our faith and spirits high and not to give up. If you’re feeling super anxious, please read and meditate on Psalm 91. It doesn’t seem like it right now but everything is going to be okay. I hope these points were helpful and I pray everyone and their families will make it out of this unharmed and healthy.   2. Great post! I love a good routine! So glad to see your spending your time productively. I can’t even tell you how many times I say I want to start yoga but I just don’t feel in the right head space for it ☹️ I’m still going to try!

    1. Thanks Tiani! I think that’s the beauty of yoga – you can come stressed, anxious, angry… whatever headspace you’re at and you’ll just notice the difference afterwards. I hope you’ll make the decision to just go for it one of these days and fingers crossed it will bring some peace! Stay safe πŸ™‚
